Subforums

Hi!

I really like FluxBB, but I think it lacks of a multi-level subforum feature. I need this feature to create nested forums by country and city, is the same way this web organizes language schools by country and city: Lingodb.com

For example:

General forums
|_France
|          |_Paris
|          |_Lyon
|_Italy
|       |_Rome
|...

Does anybody know if this feature will be future? Or of any other forum solution that allows it?

Thanks,
Johny Lingodb

This is something I think we should consider for version 2.0, though I haven't really thought that much about it or discussed it with anyone.

It seems to me though that it would make sense to do away with the categories and forums idea, and simply have forums which can contain both posts and other forums (I guess with an option to disable either). That way the index page would actually just be a special root forum with posts disabled. The problem with this idea is I'm not sure how we would nicely split forums up on the index, which really is quite important.

Re: Subforums

Reines, that's a very good question.

I say just keep the categories and let subforums have them, but make them optional.

Re: Subforums

i think the index page would be a container - it doesn't have to be a forum as the index page could be used for anything, and forums could just have a simple parent field, 0 for no parent, and the forum id for those that are sub forums. as for the index page, i think showing them as a sub listing would be fine - ie ul -> li (main forum) -> ul (sub forums) -> li (subf1) | li (subf2) type of effect.

this could just be the title of the subforums, or the whole shebang of last posts etc.

Re: Subforums

I thought categories are very useful. If i have to decide between subforums and categories, then i would go for the categories, because they make the index-page more attractive and you have a better overview.

Re: Subforums

One advantage of the subforums is that you can have more than 1 level, and in the case you want to have a subforum per city it would be difficult to manage it with categories.

Re: Subforums

In relation with this ticket, please don't delete the "category" notion. Many people find it very useful to rank the information. Like you said it :

Or a solution will be to have the forum of level 1 as category with an option in the admin / profil pannel. By example here :

  • "FluxBB", "1.4 support", "1.2 Support", "General", "Archives" will be forums, with subforums below

  • By default, we only see them if you configure it like this

  • Members should decide to see them as "categories", with the "sub forum" of first level as forum, like actually

Re: Subforums

I really like the subforum idea and think it is one thing that's really missing from FluxBB. Performance-wise it shouldn't be too much of a hit (I think it might even be done without a hit at all). I used phpBB2 for years and until phpBB3 came out that was the single biggest feature we used. Moved to FluxBB because out of all of the forums I benchmarked FluxBB was the fastest.

Re: Subforums

It will most likely be that way in 2.0. You can subscribe to ticket #333 to get notified about news on that topic.

Re: Subforums

Thanks Franz! I subscribed. Really great piece of software you guys are working on (I especially like the well commented code, I know this is a fork of another system, but it's still a great base with a smart focus). You don't really need all of the other stuff that other forums have, outside of that request I don't think it needs much else in the base. Everything else should be moddable (looking forward to how the extension system will work, too, I've always disliked modifying core files on phpBB and elsewhere, not much of a PHP coder, just copy-paste stuff).

Re: Subforums

This is now implemented, I'll make a more detailed announcement post about this soon.

Re: Subforums

Hello,

I have a question. Is it possible to create sub-subcategory? Something like this:

General forums
|_France
|          |_Paris
|                   |_ Tour Eiffel
|                   |_ Champs Elysee
|          |_Lyon
|_Italy
|       |_Rome
|                 |_ Colisseum
|       |_Milan
....

Thanks

Re: Subforums

Ah. Not unlimited sub forums like yours, but you can still have one or more sub forums in each standard forum.
